Oxford, OH – The IPFW Mastodons fell victim to a 16-0 second-half run, turning a six-point deficit with 15:00 to play in the game to a 22-point disadvantage less than five minutes later, falling to the Redhawks of Miami (1-1) by a 73-57 score in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, dropping the team to 0-3 in the young season.
Anne Boese scored 11 points off the bench to lead IPFW, while Courtney Reed added nine. Jordan Zuppe and Nan Moore each scored seven in the losing effort. Two players, Zuppe and Moore, each grabbed four rebounds, as the ‘Dons were out-rebounded by a 58-25 margin in the contest. Center Eva Ivanova blocked three shots, with Reed picking up a pair of steals.
The ‘Dons got on the board first with a lay-in by Ivanova, her only points of the game, 11 seconds into the contest. Miami answered with five straight points, taking a lead they would hold onto for the next eight minutes of game play. The Redhawks increased their lead to as many as four; however, a tight IPFW defense kept the ‘Dons in the game, as they re-claimed their lead on Zuppe’s first three-point basket of the season with 8:16 to play in the opening frame.
The lead changed hands when Miami’s Courtney Reed, converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give the hosts a one-point lead 12 seconds later. IPFW re-gained the lead on a Laura Gerhardt jumper in the paint with just under eight minutes to play, and it would be the last time IPFW would hold a lead in the game, as Miami ran off seven straight points to lead by six with 4:40 to play in the opening period.
IPFW closed the first-half gap to three on three separate occasions, the first on a Boese lay-in, the second on a jumper in the lane by Gerhardt and the third on a pair of free throws by Boese; however, an 8-5 Miami run to end the half sent the ‘Dons into the locker room trailing by six at 38-32.
IPFW and Miami went back and forth to start the second half, with the ‘Dons trailing by six at 44-38 before the host Redhawks ran off 16 consecutive points, eventually taking a 22-point, 60-38 lead with just under 11 minutes to play in the game. The ‘Dons fought back, eventually getting as close as 14 following a Moore three-point basket; however the gap was too deep for IPFW to overcome, as Miami cruised in the final ten minutes to a 73-57 final score.
Jenna Schone scored a game-high 21 points for the Redhawks, as the Miami version of Courtney Reed won the head-to-head scoring battle 13-9. Ashleigh Brown scored eight for Miami, with four players adding seven. Jaclyn Leinninger, who broke the Warsaw High School scoring record which was previously held by IPFW assistant coach Hilary O’Connell, pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, with Ashley Hawkins dishing out five assists.
The ‘Dons next take the court on Wednesday, November 26 when they host the Stags of Fairfield University at 2:00 PM at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
