BOX SCORE
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind Anne Boese's season-high 25 points and career-high eight three pointers, the IPFW Mastodons fought their way past Butler 68-60 Sunday afternoon at the Gates Sports Center.
The Mastodons have won back-to-back games and move to 2-3 on the 2011 season. Butler falls to 1-2 with the loss. IPFW is now 4-5 all-time against the Bulldogs.
Looking to push the tempo early, the Mastodons did just that after taking a 17-7 lead thanks to early buckets from Stephanie Rosado and Boese. With 4:46 remaining in the first half, Erin Murphy took matters into her own hands, scoring on four of IPFW's next five possessions to give the Mastodons a 33-16 lead. Heading into halftime, IPFW remained on top 38-23.
In a more aggressive second half, Butler climbed back and cut the Mastodon lead to eight with 10:26 left on the clock. Devin Brierly led the Bulldog charge with a pair of three-pointers and a layup in the stretch.
Not shaken, Boese drained a deep three-pointer two minutes later to put IPFW back ahead by double-digits at 62-49 with 6:03 left in the contest. Another Brierly basket jump started one final Butler comeback attempt and put the score at 62-55.
After running down the clock with perimeter ball movement, Rachel Mauk earned a trip to the foul line and sealed the victory for IPFW with a pair of game-clinching free throws. As the final horn sounded, IPFW held on to a 68-60 home victory.
Boese's eight three-pointers was the fourth best single-game performance in Summit League history. With 240 career three-pointers, she moves into second place on the all-time IPFW list, just 10 behind current leader and former teammate Jordan Zuppe (250).
Murphy came up big for IPFW off the bench, especially in the first half, as she finished with 17 points. Mauk recorded 10 points, while Amanda Hyde totaled six and a career-high nine rebounds. IPFW shot an impressive 51% (20-39) from the floor in the win.
IPFW returns to the floor on Saturday, Nov. 26, when they welcome Hampton to the Gates Sports Center. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
