Softball Drops Midweek Game to Boilermakers
4/15/2015 9:11:00 PM | Softball
Miranda Marion and Morghyn Neal each finished their day at the plate going 1 for 2. Neal drove in the lone Mastodon run. Taylor Gordy Prescott drew a walk and scored a run for the 'Dons.
The Mastodons jumped out to the early lead in the top of the first. Gordy Prescott led off the game drawing a four-pitch walk. After a sacrifice bunt and an illegal pitch moved her to third, Gordy Prescott scored on a single by Neal that bounced out of the glove of the diving Purdue second baseman.
IPFW was retired in order in the second, third, and fifth innings. In the top of the fourth, Marion led off with a single through the left side. Things turned for the 'Dons as the next batter hit into a double play. Kelly Pevely then drew a walk, but she was left stranded at first as the final out was recorded.
Purdue plated seven runs in the bottom of the first as that would be all it would need. The Mastodons allowed just a single run in the second as starting pitcher Sarah Lazarowich escaped further damage stranding runners on first and second. The Boilermakers scored six times in the third inning, all of which came with two outs. Avery Nelson came on to record the final out of the third and did not allow a Purdue run in the bottom of the fourth.
Lazarowich took the loss in the circle for the 'Dons throwing 2 2/3 innings and allowing 13 earned runs on 12 hits. Nelson came on for the final 1 1/3 and surrendered one hit in the six batters she faced.
IPFW returns to action for a Summit League series when it hosts North Dakota State for a doubleheader on April 18 beginning at 10:30 a.m.
