Women's Basketball Unable to Hold on in Final Seconds
2/4/2016 11:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACOMB, Ill. - Josie Fisher's layup with 4.6 seconds remaining looked as if it would be the game-winner for the IPFW women's basketball team, but a Western Illinois jumper with 0.7 seconds to go sent the Mastodons down in heartbreaking fashion 88-87.
Fisher came off the bench to score a career- and game-high 28 points. Fisher also led the way with a game-high five assists and two steals while hitting 10-of-12 at the free throw line. Kamilah Carter scored 12 of her 22 points in the third quarter. Rachel Rinehart grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with 18 points, 10 of which came in the first quarter.
The two teams combined for 48 points in the opening quarter. Trailing 27-21 to begin the second quarter, the 'Dons fought back with a 14-3 run, tying the game 37-37 with 3:52 left in the half. WIU and the Mastodons exchanged free throws in the final seconds as the Leathernecks tied it 44-44 on a free throw with 1.1 second remaining.
A 9-2 stretch in a 2:10 span near the start of the third gave IPFW a 58-51 lead with 6:61 to play. Western Illinois followed with an 11-3 run to lead 62-61. Carter hit a layup for the Mastodons with 1.4 seconds to go in the period, giving them a 68-66 lead.
Back-and-forth they went in the fourth quarter, exchanging 13 leads and five tie scores. Neither team led by more than three points in the final frame. Trailing by three, 84-81, the 'Dons scored four straight points, capped off by a give-and-go from Fisher to De'Jour Young with 37.1 seconds to play.
After the Leathernecks hit a pair of free throws, Fisher drove through the lane and connected on the layup with 4.6 left, forcing WIU into a timeout. Mallory Boyle turned it around on IPFW, scoring on a jumper off an offensive rebound to down the Mastodons.
On the night, the 'Dons shot 32-of-70 (45.7%) from the floor, while knocking down 6-of-15 (40%) from downtown, and 17-of-23 (73.9%) at the free throw line.
IPFW has the weekend off before returning to the road at Omaha on February 11 for an 8 p.m. ET tipoff.
