Hahn Sets Single-Match Digs Record in Five-Set Thriller
9/24/2016 12:27:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
OMAHA, Neb. - Olivia Hahn set a program record for digs in a match while Nicole Rightnowar and Somer Johnson had a double-double as the Fort Wayne women's volleyball team defeated Omaha 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 15-13). It was the Summit League opener for both teams.
Hahn's team record 48 digs are the most by an NCAA Division I player this season (four more than anyone else entering the night) and are second most in Summit League history. Hahn's new mark eclipsed the old Mastodon record of 47 by Tessa McGill on Sept. 14, 2010 against Ball State. She becomes only the fifth player in Fort Wayne history to surpass 40 digs in a match. It is only the fourth time that a Mastodon has reached 40 digs during the 25-point rally scoring era (since 2008).
Rightnowar finished with a career- and match-high 25 kills to go along with 14 digs to earn her fifth straight double-double. Johnson ended the night with 19 kills and 17 digs. Madison Jaqua dished out a season- and match-high 60 assists while Victoria Mills added 15 digs.
Omaha began the match with a 10-4 advantage to take the opening set. Fort Wayne returned the favor in the second set, going up 13-5 early to pick up the frame. The Mastodons went up early in the third set before Omaha pulled within two, 20-18. The 'Dons responded by winning five of the next six points to take the third.
The fourth set was the closest of the match with 13 ties. With the score knotted 21-21, the Mavs picked up four of the final five points to force the decisive set. With the score tied 5-5, Fort Wayne used a four-point run to regain the lead. Omaha rallied with a 5-1 advantage to tie the set at 13-13. A kill from Rightnowar and a solo block by Natasha Medic put the match away for the Mastodons and give them the victory.
Fort Wayne wraps up its first Summit League weekend when the Mastodons travel to Western Illinois on September 25 for a 2 p.m. match.
