Luhning, a 1991 Honorable Mention All-American, stands 10th in the men's volleyball program's record book with 1,363 kills. Additionally, his 778 career digs rank second all-time behind All-American and IPFW Athletics Hall of Famer Jay Golsteyn. He also helped lead the team to the 1991 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Tournament Championship, and to the NCAA Final Four.
He was named First Team All-MIVA in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and his 474 kills in 1990 rank as the 17th highest single-season total in program history. His 244 digs in 1990 remains seventh on the all-time single-season list, and he will join former teammates Norman Almodovar, Lloy Ball, Golsteyn, Fred Malcolm, Raul Papaleo, and head coach Arnie Ball, in the Hall of Fame.
