Fort Wayne, IN- An early goal and an insurance goal late propelled Valparaiso to a 2-0 win over IPFW on Sunday afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The Crusaders scored their first goal of the match at the 11:47 mark. Senior defender Henrik Turk set up freshman forward Steve Shively right in front of the Mastodons' net, and the frosh buried it.
Valpo (7-5-0) carried that lead for most of the match.
IPFW had a golden opportunity to tie the contest in the 84th minute of play. Freshman midfielder Boomer Roller found himself alone with the ball inside the 18, but his blast clanked off the crossbar.
As it happens so many times, when you don't capitalize on a chance, you give one up at the other end. On the next rush down the field, Valpo forward John Allendorf sent a ball to senior midfielder Jeremy Stacy. Stacy toed up a shot from about 10 yards out that beat IPFW keeper Josh Howell to the right side.
Valpo out shot IPFW 19-12 in the match. Howell made eight saves for IPFW (1-12-1), while Valpo keeper Sean McGinnis turned back the two IPFW shots he faced.
The Mastodons will next host Cleveland State in another non-conference match up on Wednesday night at 6pm.
