Fort Wayne, IN-After a slow start that saw Marygrove College jump out to a 6-1 lead, IPFW put it on cruise control and breezed past the Mustangs, 100-48 on Monday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
About the only suspense after the first few minutes of the contest was if IPFW would hit the 100-point mark. Freshman forward Terry Jenkins stepped to the line to shoot three with under a minute to play. Jenkins missed the first, but hit the next two to give the 'Dons 100.
After the sputter to begin the game, junior forward DeWitt Scott and senior guard Quintin Carouthers turned it on. Scott drilled three triples and Carouthers tossed in 13 first half points, including four on a pair of dunk, as IPFW opened up a 47-19 half-time cushion.
In the second half, just about every 'Don made a contribution on the way to the 52-point win, which is the largest margin of victory for IPFW in the Division I era.
Carouthers led five Mastodons in double-figures with a game-high 19 points.
Junior guard Demetrius Johnson, in only his second game of the season, tossed in 14 points while dishing out a game-high six assists.
Scott finished the game with 12 points, while senior forward Tyler Best and junior forward Pat Lepper each chipped in 10.
Junior guard Chris Perkins added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds, and IPFW got a nice contribution from junior forward Armend Ademi late with eight points and four rebounds.
Marygrove (6-9) was led by senior forward Darryl Gay with 14 points. He was a rebound shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.
IPFW shot the ball extremely well, finishing with a 54.7% mark from the floor.
With the win, the Mastodons improve to 4-8 on the year. IPFW's next contest will be a road game at Utah State on Thursday night. IPFW leads the series with the Aggies, 1-0, beating USU 64-59 in their only meeting on 12/7/04 at the Coliseum.
