Rock Hill, SC - The Mastodons improved to 6-6 on the season after defeating the Eagles of Winthrop on Thursday night. IPFW held the lead from the first basket and never looked back, 65-54.
From the first whistle it was all Mastodons at the Winthrop Coliseum. IPFW jumped out to a nine point lead at the 14:45 mark after hitting five good three-pointers, 15-6. For the next two minutes and 30 seconds it was back-and-forth as both teams made three good jumpers each.
With 11:34 left in the half the 'Dons hit their first double-digit lead after Hilary O'Connell hit a three pointer to double-up on the Eagles, 24-12.
IPFW took their largest lead of the half with 6:38 left after Tina Moen's layup put the 'Dons up by 19. Johnna Lewis-Carlisle hit a three-pointer with 32 seconds left to finish the half 17 points up, 41-24.
The Mastodons never gave up a double-digit lead until late in the second half. A good shot by the Eagles cut the 'Dons lead to nine with under 10 seconds left. One foul and two free throws later, Lewis-Carlisle finished the game with IPFW up by 11, 65-54.
Lewis-Carlisle led all scorers with 24 points. She also had five boards, four assists and five steals while playing every minute.
O'Connell finished with 14 points and was 4 of 9 from the field.
Samantha Edwards led IPFW in boards with six. Edwards added six points, going 3 of 5 from the paint.
Winthrop was led by Ashley Fann with 14 points, six boards and five assists. Shelly Hankins added 12 points for the Eagles.
The Mastodons (6-6) have won their last two and will host IU-South Bend and Saginaw Valley State to start 2007. IPFW will host the Titans of IU-South Bend on January 3rd in the Gates Center. Game time is 7 PM. On January 7th Saginaw Valley will head to IPFW with a start time of 1 PM.
