
Johnson Sinks 1,015th Point in Loss to Valpo

Fort Wayne, IN - Senior Ashley Johnson reached the 1,000 point mark Wednesday night at the Gates Center against Valparaiso. Johnson would score her 1,001st point with 1:52 to go in the half, but the 'Dons couldn't recover from a ten point deficit at the half as they fell to the Crusaders, 75-67.
The Crusaders ran out to a five point lead, 9-4, less than three minutes into the game. Juliane Höhne sunk two free throws to cut Valpo's lead to one with 13:56 left. Just under two minutes later Hannah Thieke tied the game up at 17 with a good three-pointer.
Thieke and Johnson would match the Crusaders over the next three minutes before Valpo would go on a 6-0 run to take a nine point lead with 6:14 in the half. Valpo would take their largest lead of the half with just under five minutes left, 36-21.
IPFW would go on a 9-4 run to finish the half down by ten, 40-30.
Johnna Lewis-Carlisle would start the second off with a good jumper to cut Valpo's lead to eight. Just a minute later the Crusaders would take another double digit lead, and eight minutes later they would by up by 20.
IPFW would rally from there, cutting the Crusaders lead to 10 in two minutes. The 'Dons would go on an 8-2 run to shrink the lead to four, 68-64 with 3:46 left in the game. Valparaiso would hold on from there, taking the game, 75-67.
Johnson led the 'Dons with 23 points and eight boards. She added two assists and steals and was 7 of 17 from the field and 8 of 11 from the line.
Lewis-Carlisle had 17 points and two assists. She was perfect at the line (4-4) and hit six of fifteen shots.
Lieselot Malfait led defensively, posting eight boards. Höhne came off the bench and added nine points.
The Crusaders were led by Betsy Rietema with 23 points. Krystal Taylor added 11 points while Sarah Ott had 10 points. Tamra Braun led defensively with 17 rebounds.
The Mastodons (8-9) will now head to New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) for a 2 PM start on Saturday the 27th. They will then head home for a three game homestand next week. IPFW will host Northern Illinois next Tuesday, January 30th, at 7 PM in the Gates Center.
