Lubbock, TX - The Mastodons headed to Lubbock, Texas for a game at the Big 12's Texas Tech on Tuesday night. The Red Raiders led by nine at the half, and they stretched that out for the win, 72-51.
"While I am disappointed in the loss, I am pleased with our effort and the progress we made from Toledo to tonight." said head coach Chris Paul. "We rebounded well and played harder and defended better and had some good progress."
The Red Raiders started the first half with a 3-0 lead at the 18:46 mark before Samantha Edwards tied the game with a good three-pointer just 20 seconds later. For the next five minutes the Mastodons kept the game close and tied it up a second time before Texas Tech stretched their lead to six at the 12:42 mark.
The lead was stretched to the double-digit mark at the 7:49 mark, and the Red Raiders held their largest lead of 14 points with 4:51 left in the half, 29-15. A good jumper by Johnna Lewis-Carlisle would cut Texas Tech's lead to nine with 2:57 left.
Texas Tech would continue to try hard for the double-digit lead going into halftime, but IPFW would not let it happen, finishing the half nine points down, 35-26.
The second half with start with a quick 5-0 run by the Red Raiders to give them a 14 point lead, 40-26. For almost the next three minutes there would be no scoring by either team until Lewis-Carlisle hit a shot at the 16:44 mark.
With just under ten minutes left in the half, the 'Dons were able to cut the deficit to nine, 52-43. But the Red Raiders were again able to stretch their lead, this time to twenty points with 4:25 left, 67-47. Tina Moen would score the 'Dons final basket with 52 seconds left but the Red Raiders finished ahead, 72-51.
"We battled tonight at a Big 12 school." said Paul. "I am pleased with our production, Samantha Edwards played extremely well and Tina Moen and Maggie O'Connell stepped up tonight.
"Tina was good offensively and defensively for a full 30 minutes and Maggie came in and battled when Julie ran into foul trouble. If we continue to play as hard as we did tonight the rest of the season and during conference play, we'll do well."
Lewis-Carlisle led the 'Dons again with 16 points, going six of 18 from the field. She was perfect at the line, 3-3 with three steals.
Moen had 10 points and was 5 of 9 overall. She added five rebounds and two steals against the Red Raiders.
Edwards just missed double-digits with nine points. She pulled down six boards on the night.
O'Connell led defensively for IPFW with seven rebounds and a block as well as four points.
The Red Raiders were led by Dominic Seals with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Two other ladies also had double-digit points, Erin Myrick with 12 and Jordan Murphree with eleven.
The Mastodons (0-2) will open their home schedule on November 24th against the Miami (OH) RedHawks. Game time is 1 pm in the Gates Center.
