Fort Wayne, IN-Earlier this month, Utah Valley State beat IPFW by 30, in Utah. The Mastodons played a much improved game on Thursday night against the Wolverines at the Coliseum, but UVSC head enough to hold off the 'Dons, 72-63.
In a game that was nearly a statistical "dead-heat", Utah Valley State (20-7) was able to come up with the big basket when they needed it.
IPFW trailed 61-54 with 2:23 remaining in the game.
The Mastodons (10-16) got the exact open look they were trying for when junior forward DeWitt Scott spotted up from behind the arc. His shot from the left side went half way down before rolling around the rim and coming out.
That would have cut the Wolverines lead to four.
Utah Valley State made IPFW pay for the miss.
The next trip down the floor UVSC forward David Heck, who finished the game with 14 points, drilled three of them basically putting the game on ice.
Utah Valley State didn't miss a free throw the rest of the way in the nine point win.
Each squad registered three players in double-figures.
Sophomore guard Ryan Toolson led UVSC with 16 points. He was joined by Heck and junior forward Richard Troyer with 14.
Junior guard Demetrius Johnson and Scott led the 'Dons with 14 points. Junior forward Jaraun Burrows added 10.
IPFW shot 41.2% from the floor, while UVSC hit on 39.7% of their attempts.
IPFW out-rebounded UVSC 34-33.
The Mastodons will return to action on Saturday evening, at 7:00pm, hosting UT-Pan American. It will be the final home contest in the careers of IPFW seniors Tyler Best, Justin Hawkins, and Quintin Carouthers.
