
Mastodons Pound Goshen in Home Opener

Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW baseball team opened the home portion of the 2007 season with a 13-3 win over Goshen College, Tuesday afternoon at Mastodon Field.
IPFW set the tone for the game in the top of the first inning as sophomore left fielder Quentin Brown gunned down Maple Leaf shortstop Kraig Miller at plate. Miller tried to score from second on a single by DH Dustin Swartzel.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third.
IPFW cracked the scoring column on an RBI single to center by senior catcher Tony Nichting. The very next batter, senior right fielder Nick Diem doubled to center scoring Nichting and junior centerfielder Jared Davis. The 'Dons capped the four-run third with an RBI double from the bat of junior DH Aaron Kerns.
The Mastodons got a pair in the fourth and added two more in the fifth on a 2-RBI single by freshman shortstop Ryan Beer.
Goshen cut into the IPFW lead in the top of the 6th inning as catcher Sean Sears laced a single to center that score a pair.
IPFW got a single run in the sixth and seventh, and three in the eighth to win by the final of 13-3.
Brown was 3-4 on the day with two runs scored.
Davis was 3-5 with 2 RBI and two runs scored.
Beer was 3-5 with 2 RBI and three runs scored.
Freshman second baseman Scott Maciniski was 2-2 with an RBI, and senior first baseman Chris Venvertloh was also a perfect 2-2 while scoring twice.
Sears had a three runs batted in for Goshen (3-13).
Freshman Matt Antos came on in the fourth inning and tossed four innings for the win. He struck out four, while walking two.
Goshen starter Zach Miller took the loss, going 3-1/3, giving up six runs on six hits.
With the win, IPFW improves to 4-16. They will head to Mount Pleasant, Michigan tomorrow for a 3pm game at Central Michigan.
