Shreveport, LA - The IPFW baseball team continues to struggle on the road. This afternoon at Centenary, the 'Dons dropped a 9-5 decision to the Gents. The second game of today's schedule doubleheader was called because of rain.
Getting started wasn't the problem for IPFW this weekend. They scored first in all three games.
The Mastodons put up two in the first on Saturday. Junior center fielder Jared Davis got the 'Dons going in the first with a double to right field. He came around to score on an RBI single to right by senior designated hitter Tony Nichting. Junior first baseman Nick Millspaugh made it 2-0 with an RBI single of his own through the right side.
Centenary (13-16) would get one of those runs back in their half of the 1st inning. Center fielder Justin Huff tripled to right and came home on a single by designated hitter Justin Darr.
The Gents tacked on four runs against IPFW starter Stacy Herrold in the 3rd inning. Third baseman Teddy Saenz drove in two with a base-knock to right.
IPFW closed to 5-3 in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to right by freshman shortstop Ryan Beer.
Trailing 6-3 in the fifth, the 'Dons plated two. Sophomore left fielder Quentin Brown ripped his second triple of the series, scoring sophomore catcher Adam Miller, who had singled to lead off the inning. Brown came home on a sac-fly by Davis.
But, 6-5 is as close as the Mastodons would get. Right fielder Matt Webb led of the Gents' 6th inning with a solo homer, and Centenary would add two more in the seventh for the 9-5 win.
Herrold was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits over three innings. He struck out two and walked two.
Junior Johnny Noland got the win for CC, giving up five runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out one.
Aaron Bronson and Dakota Robinson came on to pitch no-hit ball in the eighth and ninth, respectively.
The loss drops the 'Dons to 4-22. They will play their 26th road game of the season on Tuesday (4/3) at Bowling Green at 3pm. IPFW is 0-2 so far this year against the Falcons. Both of those contest were played in Florida.
