Detroit, MI - The IPFW women's tennis team opened up their fall season over the weekend at the four team Detroit Invitational. At the end of day two, Amy Recht was an individual champion having won all three singles matches at #1 for IPFW. Recht also won all three of her doubles matches with partner Sachi Janek.
On day one the Mastodons faced Detroit in doubles and Niagara and Toledo in singles action.
In doubles, Stacy Lish and Ashley Coulson were victorious at #1, defeating Moore and Minic of Detroit, 8-4. Janek and Recht defeated Davis and Flankova at #2, 8-4.
Against Niagara, the 'Dons won all six singles matches. Recht defeated Vanja Lakic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Toledo proved to be tougher competition, but Recht defeated Martina Wodzinski at #1, 6-4, 6-2. Recht was the only 'Don with a win against Toledo.
Recht went into day two 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles competition.
On day two, the Mastodons made another sweep of Niagara, this time in doubles. Against Toledo in doubles, the team of Janek and Recht were victorious at #2 over Belsky and Zoubareva, 8-6.
In the final round of singles, the Mastodons faced host Detroit. Recht kept her perfect record intact, defeating Annie Moore at #1, 6-3, 6-4. Agnes Menger and Ashley Huffine also won their matches. Menger won at #6 in straight sets and Huffine won at #8 4-6, 7-6(2), 10-7.
Recht is the first Mastodon to win an individual championship since IPFW went Division I.
Recht and Janek won at #2 doubles and Lish and Coulson finished 2nd at #1 doubles. Janek played #2 and was 3rd in individuals. Lish also finished 3rd at #3 singles.
Anges Menger finished in 2nd at #6 singles.
The Mastodons will now prepare for the Ball State Invitational this Saturday and Sunday in Muncie.
