
`Dons Even Record with 3-0 Win over Jackrabbits

Fort Wayne, IN – The IPFW Mastodons trailed just twice in the entire match en route to evening their record at 8-8 on the year and more importantly improving to 4-1 in the Summit League, topping the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State University 3-0 with scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-22.
Rebekah Roehm paced the hosts with a season-high 15 kills, as Jessica Miller totaled 11. Senior setter Jessica Dominiak dished out 27 assists while adding six kills of her own. Christine Simon recorded her second consecutive double-figure dig match with 13, as Ashley Dillon chipped in a dozen in the winning effort.
Roehm led the team with three service aces, while missing a second consecutive double-double by just two digs. Kylee Hervey had a team-best three blocks with four players: Roehm, Maya Schlindwein, Miller, and Taryn Parker; each picking up a pair of blocks.
In a rematch of last season’s Summit League Tournament Championship match, won by the Jackrabbits in five sets in the Hilliard Gates Sports Center, the ‘Dons took out early in the opening set, leading 4-1 through five points. The Jacks fought back, knotting the set at four, and later at seven before IPFW slowly pulled away, using a 6-0 run to turn a 12-10 lead into an 18-10 advantage. South Dakota State clawed their way back, closing the gap to as few as three at 23-20 before the ‘Dons scored two of the final three points to claim the 25-21 first-set win.
Miller, who picked up five kills in the fifth set in IPFW's most recent match against Wright State, added five in the opening set of the evening. Roehm ended the fame with four kills, while adding a pair of service aces. Dillon dug up five kill attempts to lead the team, with Dominiak dishing out mine assists.
South Dakota State led for the only time in the match when they took out quickly in the middle set, leading 1-0 and 2-1, as the match remained close with the teams trading points through the first 29 points of the set with IPFW leading 15-14. The ‘Dons used a quick 5-1 run to push ahead by five at 20-15, before the Jackrabbits used a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to 20-18. IPFW proceeded to score the next five points, including the final three on Roehm kills, to give the second set a 25-18 final score.
Roehm totaled eight kills in the set, giving her a dozen for the match, with Dominiak picking up a trio of kills. Dominiak also gave out 10 assists in the middle frame, as Simon had 10 digs.
IPFW never trailed in the third and eventual final set; however, the set was tied three times, at 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6. With the score tied at six apiece, the ‘Dons proceeded to score the next three points, and opened their lead to as many as six at 18-12. The 'Dons led 24-19 before the Jackrabbits made a last-second comeback, cutting the deficit to a pair at 24-22, until a service error by the Jacks ended the match.
South Dakota State was led by senior Mackenzie Angner who had 16 kills, half of her teams’ kill total. Ellyce Youngren and Ashley Kathol had eight and seven kills, respectively, as the trio combined for 31 of the squad's 32 total kills. Melia Iwamoto dished out 27 assists, while Youngren had a pair of service aces. Youngren also added six blocks, as Nicole Peters and Rebecca Poeppel had five and four blocks, respectively.
The ‘Dons remain at home for their next match, at 7:00 PM on Saturday, October 4, when the team hosts North Dakota State, 3-0 victors over Oakland earlier tonight. The match is also the “Pink Out” match for IPFW, an event that helps kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. IPFW will donate $1 of every ticket sold, along with walking in the Saturday morning Making Strides walk at Headwaters Park to help raise funds and awareness of the disease.
