Fort Wayne, IN – The IPFW Mastodons were swept in the next-to-last Summit League match of the 2008 regular season by the Jaguars of IUPUI 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-18).
The loss pushes the attempted clinching of the conference’s third seed to the final regular-season match of the season. An IPFW win over Western Illinois tomorrow night will clinch the third seed for the ‘Dons, as will an Oakland victory over IUPUI; however, an IPFW loss and an IUPUI win will put the Jaguars into the third seed in the tournament. The top two seeds have already been set, as North Dakota State has clinched the top seed, with Oral Roberts taking control of the second overall seed.
Rebekah Roehm totaled game highs in kills (17) and digs (14), while hitting .311. Jamie Schwartz finished one dig shy of double figures in the category, while Kylee Hervey blocked a match-high five kill attempts. Shannon Reuter dished out 24 assists in the losing effort. In the opening set IPFW led 3-2 before the visiting Jaguars ran off five straight points to take a 6-3 lead. IPFW rallied back, using a run of 2-0 to close to within one at 6-5, and then a 6-0 run to push ahead 11-8. IUPUI scored six of the next seven points to take a two-point 15-13 lead, as IPFW would not reclaim the lead for the remainder of the set, although IPFW did tie the Jaguars at 19, 20 and 23. Following an IUPUI timeout, the visitors scored the final two points of the frame to take a 25-23 first-set win.
The second set had many similarities; however, a major difference, from the first one. Like the first set, IPFW led early (4-3), and again like the first one, IUPUI opened a large run early in the set (5-0), but the major difference was the lack of a Mastodon answer, as the Jaguars' 5-0 run gave them an 8-4 lead, one that they would not relinquish over the rest of the set. IPFW did close to within one on four occasions, and as late as 17-16, before IUPUI ended the frame on an 8-2 run to win the middle frame 25-18.
IUPUI used a 5-0 run early to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead in the third and eventual final set, and led by as many as six at 14-8 before the ‘Dons mounted a comeback, using a pair of 2-0 runs that sandwiched a 4-0 run to tie the set at 16 apiece. The tie was quickly met by another Jaguar run, this one 5-0, putting the guests ahead at 21-16. IUPUI cruised throughout the remainder of the set, winning 25-18 in the final frame of the contest.
The Jaguars had two players finish with double-figure kills, and was led by freshman Kalyse Reimbold who had 15 with Nicole Jenkins adding 11. Danielle Goodnight dished out 37 assists with Shari Bernhardt and Chelsea Bastin each recording a pair of service aces. IUPUI, currently the national leader in assists per set, had 50 total digs in the three sets, dropping their overall average of 18.86 digs per set, but still putting three players, Lauran Thompson (11), Bastin (11) and Bernhardt (10) in double figures in the category.
The ‘Dons take to the court for a 7:00 PM first serve tomorrow night against the Westerwinds of Western Illinois University at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
