Peoria, IL - After a weekend fraught with unpredictable weather and schedule changes, the IPFW women's tennis team shook off the elements and got their first-ever win over Bradley University, 6-1 Sunday in Peoria, Illinois.
The Mastodons had been slated to face Saint Louis on Saturday. That match was moved to Sunday, and ultimately cancelled.
That left the 'Dons with just the single match against host Bradley and they battled from the outset.
IPFW and Bradley split the first two doubles matches. IPFW won at No. 1 doubles but fell at No. 2 doubles. It looked as though the Braves would take the doubles point, after the team of Erin Krubeck and Kim Braun took a, 7-5 at No. 3.
But, senior Hanna Hager and sophomore Alexa Rang mounted a charge and won the match, 9-8 (4).
Four of the six singles matches went three sets.
Senior Ashley Coulson sparked another IPFW comeback with her 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Jess Buterbaugh.
Freshman Amy Recht, senior Stacy Lish, and junior Sachi Janek each dropped their opening set before rallying to win in three.
Recht, who hasn't lost a singles match at No. 1 so far in '08, topped Emily Regenold 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. She fought off two match points and rallied from 1-5 in the third set.
Lish stopped Kelly Donohue 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3, and Janek's comeback over Erin Krubeck ended in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.
With the hard-fought win, IPFW improves to 2-2 in the 2008 portion of the schedule.
The Mastodons return to action this weekend at home.
On Friday, IPFW hosts UW-Milwaukee at 9:00 a.m. and UW-Green Bay at 7:00 p.m. at the Pine Ridge Racquet Club.
On Saturday, IPFW hosts Akron at 7:00 p.m., also at Pine Ridge.
