
IPFW Drops Non-Conference Game at Western Michigan

Kalamazoo, MI - Western Michigan left fielder Chris Lewis went 2 for 4 and drove in four runs as the Broncos handled IPFW, 14-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Hyames Field.
WMU only outhit IPFW, 13-10 but the Mastodons left 14 runners on base in the contest.
The Broncos scored in the first and third innings, but each time IPFW would come back to tie.
In the 2nd inning, second baseman Scott Micinski tied the game at one with a sacrifice fly to center scoring first baseman Shaun VanDriessche.
In the 4th inning, it was Micinski again, this time with an RBI double down the right field line scoring third baseman Jimmy Gilliland.
But, with the score tied at two, WMU scored six unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take an 8-2 lead. Lewis got a pair of RBI in the fifth and a single RBI in the sixth.
The Mastodons would make a final run in the 7th inning. VanDriessche launched his team-leading sixth home run to left to lead off the frame.
With runners on second and third , and no out, shortstop Mark Carden singled through the left side scoring right fielder Aaron Kerns and Jason Doerffler, who came on to play third base in the 5th inning.
However, 8-5 was as close as the Mastodons would get.
Western Michigan (20-10-1) would score six runs in their final two at-bats to win going away, 14-5.
Macinski paced the 'Dons offense with three hits and two RBI.
Carden and VanDriessche each had two-hit games.
WMU catcher Kevan Hess was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI, two runs scored, and his second homer of the year.
Senior left handed starter Ben Bohne (1-1) took the loss to IPFW, giving up four runs, on four hits, over four complete.
Senior reliever Brian Shutzbach picked up his second win of the season (2-0). He tossed 2-1/3 innings of one-hit ball. He struck out four and walked four.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 7-22-1.
IPFW returns to action this weekend, hosting North Dakota State in Summit League Action.
