Fort Wayne, IN - Senior center fielder Jared Davis and freshman right fielder Garrett Segraves each homered to power IPFW to a, 6-5 come from behind win over North Dakota State in the final game of their Summit League series Sunday afternoon at Mastodons Field.
Segraves heroics came in the bottom of the eighth inning with the Mastodons trailing the Bison 4-3.
Sophomore first baseman Shaun VanDriessche led off the inning getting hit by a pitch from NDSU reliever Shannon Ekermans.
After a sacrifice bunt by DH Aaron Kerns, second baseman Scott Micinski walked.
North Dakota State head coach Tod Brown pulled Ekermans and brought in Chris Patterson to face left fielder Quentin Brown. That worked for NDSU as Patterson got Brown swinging, but the next batter, Segraves drilled a three-run shot out of left field. It was Segraves second homer of the year and gave the 'Dons a 6-4 lead.
The Bison didn't go quietly in the ninth. Ekermans, who returned to his DH spot after his mound appearance, blasted a lead-off homer, 400 feet to dead center field.
But that is all IPFW reliever Tyler Baatz, who entered the game with two gone in the 7th inning, would allow.
Baatz shut the door giving the Mastodons a series split with the Bison.
Davis started the IPFW comeback with his third homer of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh. With Segraves on after a lead-off single, Davis hit a frozen rope that stayed fair just inside the left field foul pole.
His homer was off of NDSU starter Shane Bushland who was making his third appearance in the series. Bushland got the win in game one of yesterday's double header. He also picked up the save in game two of the twinbill.
Ekermans took the loss (2-4) in just two-thirds of an innings work, walking one and was responsible for the two runs on base when Segraves homered.
Baatz got the win for the 'Dons (2-3) pitching 2-1/3 innings of one-hit ball. He struck out one and walked none.
Four Mastodons recorded multiple hit games. Segraves was 2-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Davis was 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Shortstop Mark Carden was 2-4 with his fifth double of the season, and Kerns was 2-3 with a run scored.
With the win, IPFW improves to 9-24-1 and 5-7 in Summit League play.
North Dakota State falls to 9-22 and 2-9 in the Summit.
The Mastodons will return to action on Wednesday night, hosting Notre Dame in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Memorial Stadium.
