Valparaiso, IN - The Valparaiso Crusaders scored the game's final four runs to push past IPFW, 8-4 on Wednesday afternoon in the final non-conference game of the season for the Mastodons.
Once the 'Dons tied the game at four in the fifth inning, the Crusaders turned to their bullpen to shut down the IPFW offense, and they did their job. Valpo relievers surrendered just one hit over the final four innings to seal the victory.
IPFW fell behind 2-0 in the 1st inning but cut that deficit in half in the second.
First baseman Shaun VanDriessche led off the inning with an infield single, stole second, and came home on an RBI single from right fielder Garrett Segraves.
The Crusaders responded with a pair of runs in the third, but IPFW would bounce back to tie it.
It was the VanDriessche/Segraves combination again. With two out in the top of the fourth, Segraves singled to center bringing home VanDriessche with the Mastodons' second run.
In the 5th inning, IPFW got back-to-back home runs from catcher Devin Taylor and center fielder Jared Davis to tie the game at four.
Valparaiso (14-27) got the eventual game winner in the 6th inning on a bases loaded walk.
VanDriessche was 3-4 in the contest. Segraves was 2-3 with the two RBI.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 11-28-1.
The Mastodons return to Summit League play this weekend at Oakland University.
Following the series with the Golden Grizzlies, the Mastodons will wrap up regular season play with home series against South Dakota State and Oral Roberts.
