Mastodons Fall in Season Opener

Normal, IL - The IPFW women's soccer team was unable to hold on to an early 1-0 lead, falling 3-1 to the Red Birds of Illinois State on Friday night at the State Complex in Normal, Illinois.
Freshman forward Brittani Roy scored the lone goal for the Mastodons with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half, giving IPFW an early 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by freshman Kateri Till. The Red Birds countered with a goal of their own nine minutes later knotting the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Within the first two minutes of the second half, the Red Birds scored a pair of goals off the feet of Alyssa Schulz and Mary Sahm, :37 and 1:59 into the second half respectively, to put the game out of reach. Illinois State out-shot IPFW 22-2 for the game, and 10-0 in the second half.
Despite the loss, goalkeepers Meagan McLaughlin and Kristen McFadden combined for 10 saves.
Next up for the 'Dons is a road game at Eastern Michigan on Friday, August 29. Match time is set for 5:00 p.m E.T.
