Fort Wayne, IN -- The IPFW men's volleyball team 4-2, (1-1 MIVA), looked to keep the momentum from Friday's win over Loyola going Saturday against No. 13 Ohio State 3-4, (1-0 MIVA). The Buckeyes however, had other plans and swept the Mastodons 3-0 (30-22, 30-22, 30-21).
Sophomore Ben Duckworth led the 'Dons with 10 kills (10-10-28) and eight digs. Freshman Phil Peterson collected eight kills (8-5-19) while Nathaniel Berg hit a career high seven kills (7-1-9), and Oliver Kook had six. Darryl Shank and setter Dan Mader had three and one kills respectively.
Shank assisted Duckworth in the digs department with seven and picked up two block assists. Mader handed out 22 assists.
The difference in the match was blocks. Ohio State out-blocked the 'Dons 27-4 in the three game match.
Set one began with an OSU service error, but IPFW returned the favor with a service error of its own. OSU then took the lead at 4-1 after two kills and a IPFW attack error. Six Buckeyes collected kills in the first frame and Ohio State led by as many as many as 10 at 22-12 and again at 23-13. Kook knocked in two kills towards the end of the set, to delay an OSU set one win 30-22.
IPFW led about half of set number two before Ohio State retook the lead at 15-14 after a kill from the Buckeye's Ben Spurlock and back-to-back Mastodon errors. IPFW trailed at 18-20 before three straight OSU errors gave them the lead again 21-20. Another kill from Spurlock tied the game at 21 before OSU went on a 6-0 run to push the score to 27-21 forcing an IPFW timeout. Duckworth banged in a ball to make it 27-21, but it was a kill from Ohio State's Ted Schoenfeldt and two IPFW errors that ended set two 30-22 despite 16 ties and five lead changes.
Set three saw the Mastodons hit their highest percentage of the night (.128), and lead at 3-2 after a kill from Peterson. Duckworth found the floor with a kill of his own to make it 4-3 for the 'Dons. Spurlock knotted things up at four before he was called for a lane violation. IPFW held the lead at 7-4 with a kill from Kook and again at 8-6 with a kill from Duckworth. The 'Dons led by as many as three in the third set at 9-6, but the Buckeyes continued to claw back and tied the frame at 13 after a kill from OSU's Robbie Klein and two IPFW attack errors. IPFW then went cold hitting the net with a service error and consecutive attack errors before coach Arnie Ball called a time out at 13-16. The 'Dons closed the gap to two at 17-19, but let OSU regain a wide margin with three straight Buckeye kills and two straight IPFW errors 17-25. Berg collected two kills at the end of the set and Peterson served an ace at match point before Klein closed the door 30-21.
Klein led all players with 16 kills (16-4-29), while Kevin Heine hit .833 (10 kills on 12 attempts, no errors). Setter Steven Kehoe dished out 43 assists and dug up 10 attacks for the MIVA's defending champions.
The 'Dons next welcome the MIVA pre-season favorite Lewis University Flyers on Friday, Feb. 6, for their last conference action until Feb. 27. Match time next Friday is set for 7:00 PM.
