Brookings, SD - After four consecutive five-set matches, the IPFW Mastodon volleyball team got a break on Friday evening, as they needed just three sets to defeat the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State University, 30-28, 25-19, 25-16. With IPFW's win, and Oakland's loss at North Dakota State, IPFW climbed into a tie for second place in the Summit League with Oakland and IUPUI.
Maya Schlindwein led the team with 15 kills, coming on 29 attempts against just five errors, for an attack percentage of .345. Rebekah Roehm kept her consecutive double-figure kill matches alive with 12, as her double-figure streak total now stands at 15. Ali Hook and Stephanie Lamberti each chipped in eight kills in the win for IPFW.
Jamie Schwartz dug up 19 Jackrabbit kill attempts, putting her double-figure streak at 14, while Schlindwein added 11 digs for her second double-double of the season, and fourth of her career. Taryn Parker, the Summit League leader in blocks and blocks per set, added six more to her totals tonight, five of which were the assisted variety, with Schlindwein chipping in four blocks. Shannon Reuter led the team with 21 assists, with Megan Steenhuysen adding 17. Roehm, ranked second in the school's rally-scoring era for career service aces, served up a season-high three, running her four-year total to 140.
IPFW trailed only briefly during the entire match, three times total, and each by one point which was erased on the following serve. In the opening set, IPFW jumped ahead early, 5-2, and held onto their lead until the Jacks scored two straight points to turn a 15-13 Mastodon lead into a 15-15 tie score.
Following a timeout by `Dons head coach Kelley Hartley Hutton, IPFW bounced back with four straight points on kills by Hook and Roehm, a Jackrabbit attack error, and Parker's solo block, taking the `Dons to a four-point lead, and forcing SDSU into a timeout of their own.
In front of a home crowd of 459, the Jackrabbits fought back, and eventually re-tied the score at 22, and again at 23. With the teams tied at 23, SDSU took their first lead of the game, before Schlindwein answered back with a kill of her own to re-tie the score at 24. SDSU led twice more, at 26-25 and 27-26, but each time their bid at a win while serving for set point was thwarted by IPWF, the first on a service error, and the second on a Hook kill.
With the set tied at 28, IPFW used a Parker kill, and then a Parker/Roehm combo block to run off the two points necessary to claim the victory, 30-28.
IPFW would not trail for the remainder of the match, jumping out to a 12-5 lead in the second set, and an 8-1 lead in the third, cruising to the three-set Summit League victory.
Ellyce Youngren led the Jacks with 10 kills, while Fiona Jones and Kaitlin Klingemann each added seven. Jones had a team-best 13 digs in the loss, as Youngren totaled three blocks, all assisted, to lead the squad.
The Mastodons travel north for their final game of the Dakota swing, as they will face off against the conference-leading Bison of North Dakota State, who have not fallen in conference regular-season action since November 2, 2007, a streak lasting 29 matches. NDSU did suffer a loss to a conference team during that span, as they fell in the opening round of the Summit League tournament, in a 3-1 battle against IPFW.
