Fort Wayne, IN - Two second half goals off the foot of Crusader forward Steve Shively lifted Valparaiso past IPFW 2-0.
For the 11th time in 16 matches this season, the Mastodon defense held their opponents scoreless in the opening frame. Just three shots, two from Valpo and one from the 'Dons, were on goal in the half. The two sides managed just 11 combined shots on the period.
Shively broke the scoreless tie in the game's 63rd minute. He carried the ball through the middle of the IPFW defense and fired a shot from 12 yards out to put the game's first tally on the board, his fourth of the year.
The remainder of the second half was marked with physical play from both sides. Thirty fouls and five cards were issued in the game.
With two and a half minutes remaining in the match the Crusaders found themselves a man up after Mastodon forward Jorge Ramirez was issued his second yellow card of the match.
They capitalized on the advantage with five seconds remaining as Shively found himself under a clear, with an empty net and no defenders in front of him. He tapped the final score in to seal the 2-0 victory and move his team to 7-6-1 on the year.
Max Touloute led the Mastodon offense with four shots. Raphael Martinez logged three, including one of the 'Dons two shots on goal. Donovan Dowling, the reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, totaled two saves on the match.
The 'Dons will return to the Summit League slate Sunday (Oct. 25) as they play host to the Western Illinois Leathernecks. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hefner Stadium in Fort Wayne.
