Valparaiso, IN- In a non-conference road match against Valparaiso, the IPFW women’s soccer team couldn’t find their offensive stride on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Crusaders 2-0 at Brown Field.
Despite the loss, the Mastodons are still in position to clinch a conference tournament berth, as they hold a 3-4 Summit League record. The ‘Dons are now 4-10-1 this season. With the win, Valpo moves to 9-8-1 on the fall.
The Crusaders got the ball rolling with an early goal in the contest. In the third minute, Sarah Jewell put the home team up 1-0, with shot off a rebound past IPFW goalkeeper Brittany Marx.
Down a goal in the opening frame, the Mastodons pushed to even the score, but fell short on two shot opportunities from Lisa Underwood. The score would remain 1-0 at the break.
Midway through the second half, Valpo found the scoreboard again, this time from Jessie White, who fired a successful shot from inside the IPFW box, giving the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
The ‘Dons had two scoring chances in the second frame, but shots from Underwood and Kari Gotschall couldn’t find the back of the Valpo goal. Although a solid effort from the Mastodons, when the regulation horn sounded, the Crusaders claimed victory, 2-0.
Underwood led the ‘Dons offense with three shots, bringing her shot total to 51 on the season. Gotschall had a shot, improving her 2009 total to 10. In her first game of the season, Marx made five saves in goal on the afternoon.
