Indianapolis, IN - Entering the match at 1-3 in Summit League action, the Mastodons' remaining games on the schedule were labeled "must win" to reach the conference tournament. Despite out-shooting IUPUI 12-11 and maintaining a solid offensive flow, the Jaguars netted a pair of second half scores to down the 'Dons, 2-0.
The Mastodons out-shot the Jaguars 6-3 in the opening frame, but neither team could break through for a score as the half closed in a scoreless tie. The first half clean sheet is the Mastodons' 12th in 18 matches this season.
Jaguar defender Emile Garcia broke the tie in the game's 53rd minute. Teammate Kyle Hyland sent a monster throw-in into the box and Garcia got a head on it from 12 yards out to put the Jaguars up 1-0. The goal is Garcia's second of the season.
In a hectic minute and a half of action, the Jaguars tacked on their second and final goal of the game on a penalty kick. Two Jaguars were issued yellow cards and IPFW was issued a team yellow between the 72nd and 74th minutes of the game. IUPUI's Caleb Lindemann capitalized on the PK, his second goal of the season to seal the Jaguar victory.
Defender Raphael Martinez led the IPFW offense as both of his first half shots were on goal. Forwards Max Touloute and Cory Keitz each fired two shots a piece. Donovan Dowling stopped three of the five shots he faced.
The loss officially drops the 'Dons out of Summit League Tournament contention. Currently with three points in the standings, five teams, including the Jaguars, have already amassed six points and hold tie-breakers over the 'Dons.
Five seniors, Josh Sommer, Britton Falkenstern, Ben Gamble, Mitchell Haifley and Ben Haifley, will close out their IPFW careers next Saturday (Nov. 7) as the 'Dons host the UMKC Kangaroos for a 1 p.m. kick-off of Senior Day 2009.
