Indianapolis, IN – The IPFW Mastodons were swept 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-20) on Friday night by the Jaguars of IUPUI, dropping the squad to fourth in the Summit League.
IPFW was held without an attacker in double-figure kills for just the third time this season, as the team was led by Maya Schlindwein’s nine kills. Rebekah Roehm and Stephanie Lamberti each added six kills in the losing effort. Megan Steenhuysen picked up a double-double with 24 assists and a team-high 13 digs, as senior Jamie Schwartz added 10 digs. Schlindwein’s four blocks were best on the team, as Alli Hook, Taryn Parker, and Steenhuysen each added three.
The Mastodons led early in the first set, including by as many as four at 11-7, until the host Jaguars clawed their way back, using a 9-1 run to jump ahead 16-12, and didn’t look back in the 25-19 opening frame.
IUPU scored the first two points of the middle set, and never trailed, although IPFW fought to within two points at 15-13, until the hosts scored six straight points take their lead to eight, cruising in the 25-17 second set Jaguar win.
The third set was one of runs, as there were very few first-serve sideouts by either team, as IPFW jumped ahead after a 2-0 run to open the frame, before IUPUI scored four of the next five to lead 4-3. IPFW ran off three straight to lead 6-4, until six straight IUPUI points gave the hosts the advantage once again, at 10-6.
Trailing by four, the ‘Dons rattled off four consecutive points to tie the score at 10, before another Jaguar run, this one 5-0 gave the hosts a lead that they would not give up for the remainder of the match. IPFW got to within two at 18-16, until the Jaguars scored six of the next seven points to set up a match-point scenario at 24-17. The Mastodons valiantly fought back, scoring three straight to close to within four at 24-20, but a kill by IUPUI’s Kalyse Reimbold, her 16th of the match, sent the hosts ahead of the Mastodons in the league standings with the sweep.
Reimbold’s 16 kills were tops in the match, as Lindsey Weber added nine. IUPUI’s setter Danielle Goodnight became the school’s all-time leader in assists, as her 35 assists in the match took her four-year total to 3,816. Shari Bernhardt led the team with 16 digs, as Ashley Johnson had a match-high six blocks.
The Mastodons turn around and will play against Western Illinois University on Saturday evening at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Tonight the Leathernecks fell in five sets to the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University, who currently sit in second place in the league.
