MURRAY, Ky. - The IPFW women's golf team opened play Monday at the New Wave Communications Classic hosted by Murray State and played at Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Kentucky.
Jillian Speece led the Mastodons Monday by shooting a team best 85 (40-45) which put her tied for 13th place after day one. Her sister Jacque Speece finished tied for 17th with an 86 (40-46). Alison Rathsman and Nikki LeRose played competitively for IPFW finishing with a 91 and 92 respectively. Freshman Tosha Embry finished the day with a 104.
"The practice round was snowed out," coach Jessica Steward said. "I don't think the temperature rose above 39 degrees today."
Despite the conditions, IPFW currently sits in seventh place in the nine-team invite. The `Dons finished day one in fourth place in team pars with 30.
The match was the first of the year for IPFW which returned two seniors in, Rathsman and Jacque Speece.
Tournament host Murray State and Tennessee Tech are currently tied for the team lead with 328. Austin Peay is one stroke behind at 329.
Tennessee Tech's Megan Bradford is the top individual player with a round one 77 (37-40).
The `Dons wrap up play tomorrow with day two of the tournament. Tuesday's forecasted high is 43 degrees.
"It's hard to shake off the competitive rust in these conditions," Steward said. "But the girls have kept great attitudes and I'm confident they will only improve from here."
