
'Dons Downed by No. 15 Loyola

Chicago, IL – Despite a tight third game, the IPFW men’s volleyball team surrendered to the Ramblers of Loyola-Chicago Friday night 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 31-29).
Ben Duckworth led the ‘Dons in the effort with 12 kills. Darryl Shank collected seven while middles Oliver Kook and Nathaniel Berg had five and four kills respectively. Freshman Phil Peterson added four kills while setter Dan Mader snuck in three.
IPFW took a quick 2-0 lead in the first set but Loyola came right back and tied things up at 3-3. The Ramblers pulled away from the ‘Dons 12-8 and kept a sizeable lead the rest of the set. IPFW got within four at 21-17, but Loyola went on a 9-3 run to end the first frame 30-20.
Set two began with Loyola taking the lead early, and pulling away at 10-6. The two teams exchanged points for a short while as Loyola led 16-12, but the Rambers used a four to nothing run to give themselves an eight point lead at 20-12. Loyola led by 10 at 25-15 when the ‘Dons used their final timeout. Loyola went on to win the second set 30-19.
After the intermission, things were much closer for IPFW. Loyola still took an early lead at 6-4 but IPFW hung tough most of the way only trailing by 3-4 points most of the set. After being down 16-20, IPFW rallied to tie the set at 23-23. The Ramblers’ Nick Lamoureux tallied a kill to give LUC a 24-23 lead. Berg gave the ‘Dons a brief lead at 26-25. Shank and Duckworth both had kills late including a potential game-winner at 29-28. LUC scored the next three points with a kill and two IPFW attack errors.
With the loss the ‘Dons move to 12-13 on the year and 3-6 in the MIVA. Loyola improves to 16-9 and 5-5 in the MIVA including winning three of four in the conference.
The ‘Dons travel to Romeoville, IL next to play the Flyers from No. 12 Lewis University tomorrow. Match time is set for 7:00 PM ET.
