West Lafayette, IN - Crystal Martinez narrowly missed setting her third different school record this spring, although her time of 10:48.06 in the 3,000-meter steeple chase did earn her a second consecutive bid to the NCAA Division I Regional Meet in the event.
Martinez' time of 10:48.06 was good enough to finish first in the race, and is less than a second off of the school record time of 10:47.29 set by twin sister Crystina a season ago.
Katy Moore tied the school record in the high jump, equaling Angie Suel's 2006 jump of 5-foot, 3-inches (1.60 meters), now giving her the indoor school record and a share of the outdoor record.
Two IPFW student-athletes, Jessica Miller and Laura Williams set season-bests in the javelin at the Dave Rankin Invitational, Miller taking eighth with a toss of 101-0 (30.79 meters), and Williams ninth, tossing the spear 96-7 (29.45). Williams also took 15th in the shot put with a season-best toss of 36-9.75 (11.22 meters), while Miller narrowly missed a season best in the discus, placing 16th with a hurl of 108-10 (33.17 meters).
Alexandra Paul raced to a second place finish in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the tape in the 12.5-lap race in 17:55.24, with Jessica McNulty (10th/19:58.66) and Rachel Schultz (12th/20:25.87) also racing for the Mastodons.
Adding depth in the steeple chase was a trio of IPFW runners, Sarah Hutchings, Felicia Mondry, and Annina Gruber. Hutchings took eighth in a time of 11:30.03, while Mondry and Gruber took 11th and 13th with times of 12:06.84 and 12:44.34, respectively.
Beth Hoekstra ran to a season-best time of 5:00.07 in the 1,500-meter run, while Moore added a 19th place finish in the 800-meters to her record-tying performance in the high jump. Moore ran to a time of 2:23.80, with Jill Edmonds placing 26th in a time of 2:45.36, and Nicole Parry setting a new season best with a time of 2:47.98.
The Mastodons take to the track next weekend, when they travel to Hillsdale, Michigan, to compete in the highly competitive Hillsdale Gina Relays on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
