ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IPFW women's golf team finished its season Tuesday at the Summit League Women's Championship. The tournament, of 36 holes, was played in only one day as yesterday's round one at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course was postponed due to unplayable course conditions.
"First it was 40 mph wind, then it would be pouring rain, then it was hailing, then it was sunny, then it would be rainy again," coach Jessica Steward said. "It was just really hard to get in any sort of rhythm when you're playing in conditions like that."
The Katke Course was played at 5,899 yards with a par of 72.
The team carded a team score of 685 on the day, securing 8th place in the 10 team tournament, being edged out by 7th place Southern Utah's 683.
"I think it went pretty well all things considered," Steward said. "We would have liked to play a little better, but one thing I tried to stress to them was to not give up and make every stroke count, and I think as the second round came along, they started to do that."
Junior Jillian Speece finished tied for 15th with a 165 (80-85), while her older sister Jacque finished in 22nd with a 167 (85-82). Junior Nikki LeRose finished in 35th with a 176 (89-87) as senior Alison Rathsman carded a 177 (88-89), good for 36th place. Freshman Tosha Embry finished with a 210 (105-105).
Despite the rain and slush, one of the highlights of the day was IPFW's Jacque Speece who scored an eagle, making a par five in three strokes on the 425 yard, hole 10. Her eagle was the only one of the championship. Jacque also recorded a team-best 18 pars in the tournament
Individual honors were taken by Christy Carter of Oral Roberts who scored a 148 (72-76). Oral Roberts took home the team title, as they carded a 619, (38 strokes better than second place UMKC). Third place Oakland University scored 661 as a team.
This concludes the season for IPFW who graduates two seniors in Jacque Speece and Alison Rathsman.
