
Mastodons Fall at Ball State, 10-3

Muncie, IN - Freshman left fielder Nathan Koontz homered as part of a three-run sixth inning, breaking open a close game, as Ball State topped IPFW 10-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Ball Diamond in Muncie.
It was the final non-conference game for the Mastodons in 2009.
Ball State (20-19) drew first blood in the game with a pair of unearned runs in the 3rd inning.
IPFW would take the lead away from the Cardinals in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by third baseman Mark Carden, center fielder Garrett Segraves, and designated hitter Thomas McCowan.
However, the IPFW lead didn't last long.  Ball State came right back and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, two coming on a single by Kory Benbow.
With a 5-3 lead, the Cardinals put the game away in the 6th inning by scoring three more.  Koontz hit his second homer of the season, a two-run shot, giving BSU an 8-3 cushion.
The Cards tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh for the 10-3 final.
Reliever Perci Garner to the win for Ball State (1-0).  He tossed three innings of one-hit ball.  He struck out five while walking two.
IPFW reliever Cory Bluhm took the loss (0-1) giving up six runs on six hits in 2.0 inning of work.  He walked two and fanned two.
Carden was 2-4 with a run scored to go along with his RBI.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 9-31.  The Mastodons will host their final home games of the season this weekend vs. Western Illinois.  The 'Dons and Leathernecks will play doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon.
