Shreveport, LA – IPFW sophomore Alli Hook tied the school’s three-set school record for blocks in a match, with 11 against the Ladies of Centenary, as the Mastodons swept the hosts 3-0, 25-21, 25-20, 25-16.
Hook’s block total ties a pair of Claire Jackson efforts, against Texas-Pan American on September 22, 2006, and against Evansville on September 25, 2004, as the most in a three-set match in school history, and is tied for the fourth most in school history, regardless of the length of the match.
Rebekah Roehm reached double figures in the kill column for the ninth straight match behind her 16, and classmate Jamie Schwartz picked up 11 digs, her eighth straight double-figure total. Roehm’s 16 kills were double that of the next highest individual total in the match, the eight by Jennifer Kunze of Centenary, as Hook added seven in the winning effort for IPFW. Maya Schlindwein served up a pair of aces with Shannon Reuter dishing out 35 assists.
The first set started as a back-and-forth effort, with the teams tied at 15 past the midway point of the set. While the younger Centenary squad was able to hold close through that point, IPFW ran off four straight tallies, on a Roehm block, a Taryn Parker block, a Schwartz service ace, and a Centenary attack error, pushing the Mastodons ahead 19-15.
Centenary made a late push to close the deficit to one at 22-21, before IPFW ended the match on three straight points, a Stephanie Lamberti kill, a Schlindwein kill, and a Lamberti/Hook combination block, giving the Mastodons the 25-21 opening set win.
IPFW wasted little time in opening the second set, as the ‘Dons jumped ahead 7-3. The Ladies fought back, and eventually took a three-point lead on two occasions, at 13-10 and 15-12, the latter of the two spawning a Mastodon rally, as IPFW out-scored Centenary 13-5 over the remainder of the frame, as IPFW cruised to the 25-20 second-set win.
The third set started with a Roehm/Parker combo block, and ended on a Roehm kill, and in between IPFW carried the momentum gained at the end of the second set, and put together two runs each of four and three points, as the ‘Dons trailed only briefly in the visitors’ 25-16 final-set win, behind five of Hook's blocks in the match.
Kunze had eight kills in the losing effort, and Christina Fellows had six kills, as the IPFW defense, which had 13 blocks, held the Ladies to a .039 attack percentage (28 kills, 24 errors, 102 attempts). Jaclyn Lopez had a double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs, with Brianna Kern adding a match-high 13 digs in the win.
The Mastodons keep to the road for their next two games, as they travel to Dayton, Ohio, to take on the Wright State University Raiders on Tuesday, September 29, with first-serve set for 7:00 PM, before capping the week with a one-match weekend against Oakland University on Friday, October 2.
