Muncie, IN – Three IPFW players, Rebekah Roehm, Stephanie Lamberti, and Maya Schlindwein, reached double figures in the kill column, as the Mastodons swept the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars 25-14, 25-20, 25-14 on Saturday afternoon at the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge.
Roehm, who was selected to the All-Tournament team, led the way with 14 kills, while Lamberti topped her career-high by four with 11 kills, as Schlindwein added 11 kills with the ‘Dons out-killing the Cougars 48-29 for the match. Roehm also led the team with 13 digs, as Jamie Schwartz added 11, with Schlindwein and Parker totaling five and four blocks, respectively. Setting up the attackers, Megan Steenhuysen dished out a match-high 26 assists, while Shannon Reuter gave out a dozen helpers in the match.
IPFW (4-4) opened the first set behind a flurry of points, scoring 11 of the first 12 overall, points to lead 11-1 following a Taryn Parker and Maya Schlindwein combo block. Edwardsville (0-8) closed to seven following a Karie Downing kill, the closing point of a 3-0 run to take the score to 13-6, and IPFW led 14-7 before the ‘Dons ran off six straight points, starting with a pair of Jen Krumwiede kills and also included two Roehm kills and a pair of Cougar attack errors.
After seeing their run stopped, the ‘Dons scored three consecutive points to push the lead to 23-8. After the teams traded sideouts, IPFW served for set point, and needed six tries to finally secure the set, as the Cougars ran off five straight points until Alli Hook closed the set with a kill down the right side of the court, securing IPFW’s 25-14 first-set win.
SIU-Edwardsville used the late momentum gained at the end of the first set, and jumped ahead 4-0, forcing an early IPFW timeout in the second set. The Mastodons responded by scoring the next three points, cutting into the Cougar lead. After a Jessica Hemann kill stopped the first run, the ‘Dons ran off a 4-0 run, started by a pair of Schlindwein kills, and capped by a Schwartz ace, and a Stephanie Lamberti kill, that gave IPFW a 7-5 lead.
Edwardsville would not stay down for long in the second frame, and after trailing 10-8 the home team on the scoreboard rattled off five consecutive points to take a three-point, 13-10 lead. They would increase their lead over IPFW to as many as four at 18-14 before IPFW used back-to-back runs of 4-0 and 5-0, and ended up scoring 10 of the last 12 points to take the second set victory by a 25-20 score.
The Mastodons dominated the third set, forcing a first-set side-out on 10 of 12 SIU-Edwardsville serves, as the Cougars scored just twice when serving. Conversely, IPFW had four 2-0 runs in their first five possessions, jumping ahead 9-4. An IPFW 3-0 run put the visitors on the scoreboard ahead by seven at 12-5, and another run, this one 4-0 which ended on a Parker kill put the ‘Dons ahead by 10 at 17-7. Ahead by 10, IPFW cruised, ending the school’s final appearance at the Active Ankle Challenge with the 25-14 third-set victory.
SIU-Edwardsville was led by Sydney Winslow who had eight kills, with Brianne Graunke digging up nine potential kill attempts, and Jamie Mueller and Sammi Minton each dishing out 11 assists.
The Mastodons next take to the courts on Thursday, September 10, when the squad travels to Cedar City, Utah, to take on the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah University, in SUU’s first-ever Summit League volleyball match, with first-serve set for 9:00 AM Eastern Time, 7:00 PM Mountain Time.
