Tulsa, OK - Oral Roberts used a 51-30 advantage in rebounding to pull away from IPFW in the second half for a 68-55 Summit League win Saturday night at the Mabee Center.
The rebounding dominance led to 28 second chance points for the Golden Eagles who improved to 9-8, 4-2 in Summit League play.
IPFW and Oral Roberts went to half-time tied at 29.
In the second half, IPFW took their only lead of the game on an early layup by sophomore forward Trey McCorkle.
From there, ORU began to pull ahead. Senior forward Kevin Ford ran the floor on a fast break and was rewarded with a nice dish from sophomore forward Dominique Morrison. He threw down a monstrous windmill slam that brought the Mabee Center crowd to its feet and gave ORU a four-point lead.
Morrison drained a 3-pointer from the wing to push the Golden Eagles lead to 47-39.
IPFW would claw back on a triple from junior guard Zach Plackemeier. Plackemeier would go 4-4 from behind the arc and trail by just two at 48-46 with 8:42 remaining.
But every time the 'Dons looked poised to take the lead, the ball didn't bounce their way. Morrison got an old fashioned 3-point play off of his own miss.
Ford then pushed the ORU lead to 11 as a miss fell into his hands and he got the easy putback.
From there, the Golden Eagles hit some free throws down the stretch to win by 13.
Of Oral Roberts 51 rebounds, 20 were offensive. Ford was the game high scorer for ORU with 25 points. Junior forward Michael Craion added 17 and Morrison registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Plackemeier finished with a team-high 18 for IPFW who fell to 6-9, and 1-3 in Summit League play. Senior forward Deilvez Yearby and junior guard Ben Botts each chipped in 12.
Coming off an 18-turnover performance at Centenary on Thursday night, IPFW turned the ball over a season-low seven times against the Golden Eagles.
IPFW will return home for two conference games next week. On Thursday night IPFW will host Southern Utah. That game will be played at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's game vs. UMKC will be back at the Memorial Coliseum, also at 7:00 p.m.
