Shreveport, LA - The IPFW women's volleyball team won the program's 800th all-time match, and moved into sole possession of first place in The Summit League in a 3-0 sweep of the Ladies of Centenary on Friday evening by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-19, the ninth straight win of the season for the Mastodons.
The 800 wins comes just shy of the 1,200th game as a program, and the program now sports an 800-399 all-time record in its 33rd year.
The win is the ninth straight for IPFW, all in the month of October, and improves the team to 16-8 overall. Southern Utah, who came into the match tied with IPFW for first in the league, fell to UMKC at home in five sets, pushing the Mastodons to a game ahead of the pack in the league standings.
Senior Maya Schlindwein continued her hot offensive streak by knocking down a match-high 15 kills for her 15th consecutive match reaching double figures in the stat, now tied for the fifth longest such streak in IPFW women's volleyball history. Stephanie Lamberti added nine kills and a .571 attack percentage, while Alli Hook was perfect, knocking down all eight of her attempts for a percentage of 1.000.
Megan Steenhuysen dished out a match-high 38 assists, with Schlindwein serving up a pair of aces. Two players, Hook and Schlindwein, had four blocks apiece, as Taryn Parker had three blocks to go with her six total kills. Jen Milligan had a match-high 14 digs, with Schlindwein adding nine.
IPFW hit a blistering .326 for the match, the third highest on the team, behind just the .389 for the Mastodons in the earlier meeting the Ladies, and the .340 against Bowling Green on September 11.
The Mastodons wasted little time in the opening set, scoring eight of the first nine points to jump ahead 8-1 after a series that included three Schlindwein kills. IPFW led by as many as 13 at 18-5, and coasted in for the 25-17 first set win.
Centenary fought back in the second set, and took its first lead of the evening at 5-4, and led by two at 7-5 before the Mastodons rattled off seven of the next eight points to lead 12-8, and never trail again in the middle set. The Ladies cut the deficit to as few as two at 20-18, before the Mastodons pulled away late with a 4-1 run to win the second frame 25-19.
IPFW jumped ahead early in the third set, leading 4-1 through the first five points before CC clawed its way back, taking a two-point lead at 13-11 after a Jaclyn Lopez service ace. That would be the last lead for the hosts in the match, as the Mastodons countered with a series of runs to pull ahead by four at 21-17.
The feisty Ladies squad would not give up, and once again fought back to climb to within two at 21-19 before a match-ending 4-0 run, capped by Hook's eighth and final kill of the match, kept the Mastodons perfect in the month of October.
Centenary was led by Stevie Hurlbirt and Shelby Singleton, who each had nine kills, with Caitlin Neese dishing out 29 assists, and Singleton blocking a match-high seven kill attempts.
The match is likely to be the final match-up with the Ladies, as at the end of this calendar year, Centenary will move from NCAA Division I to NCAA Division III, and IPFW has a perfect 9-0 record in the all-time series between the two teams.
The Mastodons remain on the road when the squad travels north to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to face off against the Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts University on Sunday with first-serve slated for 2:00 PM EST.
