Mastodons Dominate Centenary in Sweep

Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW Mastodons never trailed over the entire match, and saw the score tied just twice over the three sets, as the hosts cruised to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-16) victory over the Ladies of Centenary at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center on Saturday, improving to 12-8 on the season, and with a 7-2 record halfway through league play.
The Mastodons hit a blistering .389 for the set, with 47 kills against just 12 errors on 90 total attempts. The 'Dons held advantages in kills, assists, digs, and blocks in the three-set win.
Maya Schlindwein was the only player in the match with double figure kills, as she ended with a dozen, while Stephanie Lamberti and Alli Hook each had eight kills in the win. Megan Wiler pounded down a career-high five kills in nine total swings in the match for an attack percentage of .556. Megan Steenhuysen dished out 35 assists, and was one of four Mastodon servers, joining Taryn Parker, Schlindwein, and Wiler, to serve an ace.
Jen Milligan had a match-high 14 digs, as Tessa McGill had nine, snapping her streak of double-digit digs at 19 matches, the second longest streak in school history. Lamberti and Hook each added four blocks in the win.
IPFW jumped ahead 4-1 early in the opener, before Centenary (3-13, 0-9 Summit) fought back and tied the set after back-to-back sideouts at 6-6 and 7-7. After the last tie, the Mastodons rattled off four straight points to lead 11-7. The 'Dons would not trail again, despite the Ladies closing to within as few as two at 21-19, before the Mastodons finally prevailed 25-21.
The Mastodons scored the first eight points of the second set, and led 14-1 early, as the team cruised to a 25-12 second-set victory.
IPFW once again jumped out to a furious start to a set, scoring the first six points of the third set, and after four straight points from Centenary, the Mastodons scored four more of their own to lead 11-4. Centenary would get no closer than six the rest of the way, as the hosts took the third and final set 25-16.
Centenary was led by Stevie Hurlbit who had eight kills and a match-high four aces, with Caitlin Neese picking up a dozen assists.
The Mastodons, now tied for second in the Summit League, host South Dakota State and North Dakota State over the weekend, South Dakota State on Friday, and North Dakota State on Saturday.
