University Park, PA - No. 7 Penn State made quick work of the visiting IPFW squad, sweeping the Mastodons, 30-21, 30-22, 30-20.
The 'Dons totaled 34 kills and 23 errors on 93 total attacks to post a hitting percentage of just .118 in the match, including a mere .036 in the third and final set. The powerful Nittany Lions front line posted 13.5 blocks in stifling the 'Dons' offensive attack.
In each of the three sets, the Nittany Lions hopped out to commanding early leads that were simply too much for the IPFW squad to overcome. When all was said and done, IPFW held the lead just twice in the entire match, at 1-0 and 8-7 in the third set.
Freshman opposite hitter Elon Fyfield led the 'Dons with 13 kills. Dan Mader and Kevin Goncalves combined to post 33 assists from the setter position. Darryl Shank posted four digs and Oliver Kook logged four block assists to lead the defensive effort.
The loss drops the VolleyDons to 6-6 overall as they remain 2-3 in conference play. The 'Dons return to MIVA play Thursday (Feb. 25) as they make the short trip down I-69 to Muncie for a 7 p.m. matchup with the rival Cardinals of Ball State University.
