Lexington, KY - For the second consecutive game, IPFW could not solve Kentucky's left-handed pitching as freshman Taylor Rogers struck out eight in seven innings leading the Wildcats over the Mastodons, 11-2 on Saturday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Rogers scattered four hits in grabbing his third win of the season.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, UK got four in the bottom of the 4th inning, three coming on a home run by right fielder Cory Farris. It was Farris' second round-tripper of the season and gave Kentucky a 5-0 lead.
The score remained 5-0 until the bottom of the 7th inning. IPFW reliever Ryan Jacobson couldn't grasp control of his fastball on a cold and blustery afternoon and he hit three Wildcat batters and walked two more in the inning. RBI singles by Chad Wright, Andy Burns and Brian Adams scored six runs and blew the game wide open.
IPFW would finally get on the board in the top of the ninth against UK reliever Kyle Jackson. Pinch hitter Ryan Beer singled to start of the frame. Pinch hitter Austin Bower would chase Beer home with a double to right center. Bower would eventually score himself on an infield groundout by center fielder Kurt Dudley, but that would be all the scoring IPFW would muster in the game.
Mastodon starter Ryan August was saddled with the loss (0-3). He gave up just the earned run in the first inning on five hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Shortstop Will Faulkner was the only Mastodon with multiple hits, going 2-3 on the afternoon.
No. 22 Kentucky won for the 12th time this season against two losses. IPFW fell to 1-11.
The finale of the three-game series will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Kentucky will send sophomore RHP Alex Meyer to the hill against IPFW starter junior RHP Lucas Kesterson.
