Fort Wayne, IN - Contrary to last year's 22-19 slugfest at Mastodon Field, IPFW and Purdue did everything they could to manufacture runs on Tuesday as the Boilermakers held off an IPFW comeback to win, 3-2 in non-conference play.
The Boilermakers opened the scoring in the 2nd inning. After two out, first baseman Ryan Bridges singled and came all the way around from first on an RBI double by Barrett Serrato to make it 1-0 Purdue.
Purdue (24-16) added to their lead in the 3rd inning as left fielder Tyler Spillner tripled to right center field. It was Spillner's seventh triple of the season setting a new Boilermaker record. On the next play, second baseman Eric Charles would line out to right field. Right fielder Joel Washko's throw home took a wild hop off the infield grass over catcher Cory Miller's glove. That allowed Spillner to race home from third.
Purdue got an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Spillner singled to open the inning and scored on an RBI single by catcher Dominick D'Agata. That would turn out to be a huge run.
IPFW opened the bottom of the seventh with consecutive singles by designated hitter A.J. Christensen, third baseman Shaun VanDriessche and center fielder Kurt Dudley. With the bases loaded, second baseman Jason Doerffler walked to plate the 'Dons first run of the game.
Boilermaker reliever Sean Collins would strike out shortstop Will Faulkner before giving up an RBI ground out to first baseman Austin Bower. But with runners at second and third Collins would get right fielder Nate Thomas looking to end the threat.
From there, Purdue turned the ball over to reliever Brad Schreiber and he shut the door, pitching 2.1 innings of no-hit ball to save the win for the Boilers.
Purdue starter Robert Ramer tossed the first five innings for the win (2-0). He didn't give up a run and allowed just two hits. He fanned two and walked one. Schreiber earned his first save of the season.
IPFW starter Cory Bluhm took the loss (0-1), giving up one run on one hit. He walked one and struck out one. Ryan Jacobson and Matt Ransbottom each tossed two innings of no-hit ball for IPFW in relief.
With the loss, the Mastodons fall to 10-29. IPFW returns to Summit League play on Friday, hosting Oral Roberts in a four-game set at Mastodon Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
