BOX SCORE
Indianapolis, IN - Coming off of their first Summit League loss of the 2010 season, the IPFW Mastodons rebounded by taking down intra-state rival IUPUI in four sets, 21-25, 25-20, 25-10, 25-14.
It was a match of strong defense for IPFW, as five players reached double-figure digs, and four others had at least four blocks. Leading the defensive attack was Stephanie Lamberti and Tessa McGill, as the pair had 17 and 15 digs, each. Leading the block was sophomore Jessie Manwaring, who had a career-high eight, while Taryn Parker and Maya Schlindwein each had five.
Offensively Lamberti had 13 kills, as Maya Schlindwein added a dozen. Megan Steenhuysen dished out 37 assists, while Lamberti had a match-high two service aces.
The opening set started with the Jaguars coming out in full control, using a pair of 3-0 runs to jump ahead 8-3 early in the contest. Following an IPFW timeout, the Mastodons ran off six consecutive points to take their first, and only, lead of the set at 9-8.
IUPUI answered IPFW's 6-0 run with a 5-0 streak of their own to push their advantage to four at 13-9. The lead grew to as many as five at 20-15, before the 'Dons proceeded to score six of the next nine points to cut the deficit to a pair at 22-20; however, IPFW could not make up the entire deficit, as the hosts scored three of the final four points of the set, taking the frame on back-to-back kills from Lindsey Weber.
In the second set, the teams went back-and-forth with IPFW leading 3-2 before the hosts rattled off a pair of 3-0 runs sandwiched between an Alli Hook/Schlindwein combo block, pushing the hosts doubled up on the Mastodons early at 8-4. IPFW immediately responded with a 3-0 run, and after seeing that streak stopped, the visitors rattled off six straight points to jump ahead 13-9.
The lead grew to as many as eight at 20-12 before the Jags scored seven of the next eight points to cut the Mastodon advantage to two at 21-19. The 'Dons absorbed that late flurry from IUPUI, and scored for of the final five points of the set, taking the second-frame win with two straight kills from Lamberti.
The third set was all IPFW, as the visitors used a 3-0 run to take their first lead of the game, and then ahead by one at 4-3, the 'Dons rattled off seven straight points to lead 11-3. The offense kept its torrid pace, while the defense forced a sideout after every Jaguar point after the scored was 4-2, as the Mastodons ran away with the third set 25-10.
The fourth and final set was a near-mirror image of the first, with IPFW using an 8-2 run to push ahead to a 10-6 lead, before using their second 7-0 run of the match to cruise to a 25-14 clinching-set victory.
Bethany Fogler led the Jaguars with a dozen kills, as Shari Bernhardt had a match-best 19 digs.
The Mastodons next take to the court on Friday, September 24, when the squad hosts the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds with first-serve slated for 7:00 PM.
