Cincinnati, OH - In the second of three matches at the Xavier Invitational, the IPFW Mastodons fell in their third straight match, as they were swept by the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 26-24, 25-16, 25-22.
Taryn Parker had a match-high nine kills, with Maya Schlindwein and Alli Hook adding eight kills each. Hook lead the team with four blocks, as McGill had 13 digs, her sixth straight match to open the season with double-digit digs.
Western Kentucky opened the match strong, scoring the first three points of the opening set, and kept their three-point lead at 5-2 before the Mastodons stormed back scoring four consecutive points to take a 6-5 lead early in the contest. The teams traded runs, for the remainder of the set, with the Mastodons taking their final lead of the set at 18-16.
The Hilltoppers answered the two-point deficit by scoring three straight points to take a 19-18 lead, and never trailed again in the set. The Mastodons tied the score at 19, 22, and 24, before kills from WKU's Jordyn Skinner and Tiffany Elmore ended the set for the Hilltoppers by way of a 26-24 score.
The 'Dons jumped ahead 3-0 to start the second set on a trio of WKU errors - a service error, a ball handling error, and an attack error. IPFW and WKU fought tightly through the opening 20 points, as the teams were tied at ten apiece, before the Hilltoppers scored seven of the next eight points to take to a 17-11 lead. The Mastodons were able to climb to within five on four occasions, including as late as 20-15, before WKU ran off five of the next six points to take the second set 25-16.
Western Kentucky jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the third set, as the three-point margin represented the largest margin in the contest. There were a total of 12 tie scores, and four lead changes in the final set, with the last tie score coming at 17 all, before WKU scored three straight points to lead 20-17. Three times IPFW closed the gap to one point, but the late three-point deficit was too much to overcome, with IPFW falling in the finale 25-22.
Megan Steenhuysen dished out 27 assists, as Parker and McGill had a service ace each.
Elmore and Skinner had 14 and 10 kills, each, as Ashley Potts had a team-best 13 digs.
The Mastodons take to the court at 4:30 this afternoon against Northeastern University in each of the team's final match of the Xavier Invitational.
