
Mastodons Swept by Huskies 3-0

Cincinnati, OH - IPFW fell to 0-3 at the Xavier Invitational after a 3-0 loss to the Northeastern Huskies in the invitational finale for the Mastodons, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.
Taryn Parker was the team kills leader in the game with nine, as Maya Schlindwein added eight and Stephanie Lamberti six. Tessa McGill and Megan Steenhuysen each had 10 digs for the 'Dons, with All Hook adding four blocks in the loss.
In the opening set, Northeastern trailed 2-1 before rattling off four straight points to push ahead 5-2, never trailing for the remainder of the set. The Mastodons closed to within two at 9-7 before the Huskies unleashed another 4-0 run to lead 13-7. The Mastodons would get to within one at 18-17, before the hosts on the scoreboard scored seven of the final eight points of the set to win the opener 25-18.
In the middle frame, after a Jillian Robinson kill to open the scoring for Northeastern, IPFW rattled off four straight points on kills from Hook and Haley Emenhiser, and a pair of service aces from Lamberti. The Huskies quickly responded with runs of 4-0 and 3-0, sandwiching a Robinson service error, giving the Huskies an 8-5 advantage.
The Mastodons fought their way back, and eventully took a one-point, 18-17 lead after an Ina Kamenova ball handling error, and lead 21-19 after a Parker kill before Northeastern scored six of the final eight points of the set to take the second set 25-23.
In the third, and eventual final set, the Mastodons lead 5-1 out of the gate, before Northeastern ran off a 10-2 run to lead 11-7. IPFW fought back, using a 4-0 run to take a two-point, 16-14 lead just past the halfway mark of the frame. The Mastodons kept their two-point lead through their 23rd point, leading 23-21 before Northeastern ended the match with a flurry, scoring the final four points to take the match 25-23.
Steenhuysen picked up her second double-double of the season by adding 31 assists to her ten digs, as Lamberti's two service aces led the team.
Northeastern leading attacker Britney Brown nearly picked up her second triple-double in as many matches as she led the team with 12 kills, while adding 11 assists and eight digs. Kelly Bacon also reached double figure kills with 11, while Jessica LaScola had a match-high 17 digs.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, September 10, when the squad hosts Oakland University in each team's Summit League opener.
