Mastodon Defense Dominates in 72-55 Win

Fort Wayne, IN - A balanced offensive attack that saw four Mastodons in double-figures complemented a strong defensive effort as IPFW downed in-state rival IUPUI, 72-55.
The win improves IPFW's record to 9-5 on the season, the program's best start through 14 games since joining NCAA Division I in 2001-02, while improving to 3-2 in league play.
Kayla Drake led IPFW scorers with 16 points to go along with three rebounds and an assist. After being honored before the game for becoming the14th member of IPFW's 1,000-point club, senior Jordan Zuppe posted 14 points and a career-high-tying eight rebounds.
Freshman Amanda Hyde provided a spark off the bench, scoring 12 points and Stephanie Rosado tallied 10 points, including the first six of the game, while hauling in a team-best nine boards, as IPFW out-rebounded the Jaguars 38-to-32.
The Mastodons forced 17 IUPUI turnovers, turning into 13 steals and 15 points off of turnovers, with Drake leading the way with five pilfers, as Erin Murphy added three steals to go with her five points and five rebounds.
IPFW scored on its first four possessions of the game, the opening three on baskets by Rosado, which was followed by a Drake long-range basket, putting IPFW ahead 9-0 through the first two minutes of the contest.
After a lay-up by the Jaguars' Janna Eichelberger, IPFW scored three more points to push the lead to double digits at 12-2. IUPUI fought back to close the gap to six at 14-8, before IPFW scored 13 of the next 16 points to lead by 16 at 27-11, setting the stage for a 13-point, 41-28 Mastodon halftime lead.
In the second half IUPUI closed the gap to 10 as late as 48-38 with 14:12 to play; however, the Mastodon defense held the Jaguars to just two field goals over the next nine minutes, increasing the lead to as many as 26, 70-44, with 2:27 to play in the game, as IPFW cruised to the lopsided league win.
Sydney Weinert added eight points and three rebounds, with Anne Boese scoring five points and dishing out a game-high four assists. Rosado had a game-high three blocked shots, while Zuppe and Hyde each had a pair of steals.
IUPUI was led by Jasmine Horne, who scored a game-high 23 points, and was the only Jaguar player in double figures. Demetria Nunley-Lash pulled down six rebounds for the Jaguars.
The Mastodons return to action on Monday, January 10, when the squad hosts the Western Illinois Leathernecks in a conference battle at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center, with tip-off slated for 7:00 PM.
