Mastodons Win Season Opener over Murray State 3-0

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women's volleyball team defeated Murray State in three sets on Friday night (25-12, 25-14, 25-8) ending day one of the Hyatt Place Fort Wayne / IPFW Invitational.
Sophomore Emily Spencer led the team with 13 kills while Kendall Wienkes and Jessie Manwaring also impacted the match recording nine and eight respectively. A pair of freshman recorded their first collegiate kills against the Racers as Sarah Heckman ended the night with four and Katie Higginbotham earned one.
Megan Steenhuysen was the floor general against Murray State ending the contest with 32 assists. Madison Spence substituted in for Steenhuysen during the third set and recorded a career-high seven assists.
Defensive specialist Tessa McGill was all over the court on Friday night coming up with a match-high 28 digs. She added three assists while also leading the team with three service aces.
IPFW dominated from the start in all three sets coasting to the 3-0 win. The score was only tied twice and there was also only one lead change. The 'Dons posted an attack percentage of .465 compared to just 0.65 for Murray State.
Kristin Besselsen had a team-high seven kills for the Racers. Lia Havili also impacted the match with 22 assists.
Day two of the Hyatt Place Fort Wayne / IPFW Invitational will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday as Kent State faces off against Murray State. The Golden Flashes were defeated by Cleveland State (3-0) in the opening match of the tournament.
IPFW will play two games on Saturday, starting with a 1 p.m. tilt against Cleveland State and the nightcap against Kent State at 7 p.m.
