INDIANAPOLIS - The IPFW Mastodons fell in the rematch of the two teams who faced off in last season's Summit League Championship, as the IUPUI Jaguars prevailed 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 on Saturday afternoon.
Emily Spencer led the team with 13 kills while adding 11 digs for the double-double, while Kendall Wienkes added a dozen kills, and Sarah Heckman six. Madison Spence dished out 34 assists and leading the team with three blocks, while Jen Milligan picked up a match-high 12 digs.
In the first set, IPFW (10-11, 2-3 Summit League) tied the match at 1-1 and 2-2 before the host Jaguars ran off three straight points to lead 5-2. IUPUI (9-11, 3-2 Summit) would not trail again in the first set, as the margin grew to as many as six at 17-11. Trailing by their largest total of the match, the Mastodons fought back, running off a 5-1 streak to close the gap to two at 18-16, forcing a Jaguar timeout. Despite closing the gap to two as late as 20-18, the Mastodons could get no closer, as IUPUI took the opening frame 25-20.
The second set saw a series of runs, as IUPUI scored three straight to lead by three at 8-5, before IPFW, after falling behind 10-6, scored six straight points to lead 12-10. The Mastodons would not give back their lead until the Jaguars ran off a stretch of scoring seven of the next eight points to lead by four at 20-16, as IUPUI held tight for the remainder of the set, a 25-20 Jaguar victory.
IPFW scored the first point of the third set on a kill by Spencer; however, three consecutive IUPUI points would give the hosts an advantage they would not give up for the remainder of the match. The Mastodons were able to tie the score many times - six times in all - but could not overtake the Jaguar advantage. The last tie score came at 11-11; however, the Jaguars could not pull away, as the 'Dons trailed by just one at 18-17 late in the frame. Leading by one, IUPUI ran off a 7-1 run, including a 5-0 streak, to take the third and deciding set by a 25-18 score.
IUPUI was led by Moriah Fair, who had 14 kills, as Kelly Wachtel had 11. Alexis Meeks dished out 38 assists, while Fair and Kaitlyn Hickey had 10 digs apiece.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, October 18, when the team takes on the North Dakota State Bison in an 8 p.m. first serve in Fargo, N.D.
