Eagles Drop Mastodons in Ypsilanti

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Despite two players in double-figure kills - Emily Spencer and Jadyn' Pegues - the IPFW Mastodons fell to the Eastern Michigan Eagles by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 on Tuesday evening.
Emily Spencer had a match-high 12 kills, while Pegues had 11, while Kendall Wienkes chased the pair with eight kills. In all, IPFW (6-6) had 38 total kills to 37 for Eastern Michigan. Madison Spence dished out 36 assists, while Jen Milligan's 16 digs were also a match-high. Hailie Ripley had three blocks for the Mastodons - three of those solo.
The Mastodons and Eagles played close to open the match, and with the teams tied at three points apiece, the Eagles ran off three straight points and never trailed in the set. Trailing by seven at 21-14, IPFW fought back, closing the gap to three at 24-21, but an Eastern Michigan kill snapped the comeback attempt in the 25-21 EMU win.
The Eagles scored the first three points of the second set, before the Mastodons climbed to within one, before the teams traded 18 straight sideouts, but IPFW could only get to within as few as two at 15-13, but could not get any closer in a 25-20 Eagle victory.
In the third set, Eastern Michigan jumped ahead early at 11-4, and never looked back, winning the third and deciding set 25-16.
Eastern Michigan was led by Stacey Perinar who had 10 kills, while Kelsey Jones had seven blocks in the Eagle victory.
The Mastodons return to action in the weekend when the squad will face off against Oakland and Northern Illinois on September 20 at the Northern Illinois Invitational.
