Mastodons Dominate in Cleveland State Invite Finale

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The IPFW Mastodons rebounded from a tournament-opening loss to take both games of the second day of the Cleveland State Invitational, sweeping the High Point Panthers 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-21).
Emily Spencer, who was named a member of the All-Tournament Team, led a balanced offensive attack with 10 kills, while Hailie Ripley, also a member of the All-Tournament Team, and Sarah Heckman each had nine kills, with Natasha Medic adding eight. Madison Spence dished out 35 assists, with Spencer serving up four aces. Medic led both teams with seven blocks with Spencer adding four. Spencer also dug up a team-high 12 kill attempts for the double-double, while Jen Milligan had 11 digs, and Madison Spence 10.
The Mastodons dominated throughout the three sets, as there were just eight total tie scores and two lead changes, all of those coming in the first set. the Panthers took their last lead of the match at 7-5 in the first set, before the Mastodons ran off four straight points on a pair of kills and a pair of High Point attack errors. The Panthers tied the score again at 14, and from there the 'Dons dominated, out-scoring 11-6 the rest of the set for the 25-20 win.
IPFW scored the first four points of the second set, and never looked back, and used a 6-0 run late to close the door on a 25-14 set win.
The Mastodons out-did their second set start by scoring the first five points of the third frame, and the margin got only as close as two at 9-7 before IPFW scored five more in a row to put in a margin that could not be recovered, as the Mastodons cruised to the 25-21 final-set win.
Chelsea Davis had a team-high 10 kills, while Annemarie Chin picked up 20 digs for a match-high.
The Mastodons return to action on September 10 when the squad travels to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on the Western Michigan Broncos at 7 p.m.
