Volleyball Falls 3-1 to South Dakota in Summit League Quarterfinals
11/21/2014 10:09:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The sixth-seeded IPFW women's volleyball team didn't have to travel far to take on third-seeded South Dakota as IUPUI plays host to the 2014 Summit League Women's Volleyball Championships this weekend. In a quarterfinal match on Friday night at "The Jungle" in Indianapolis, the Mastodons faced the Coyotes for the third time this season, with South Dakota taking both regular season matches.
Much like the previous two meetings, the final tally wasn't indicative of how closely contested each set was between the two squads. While the Coyotes prevailed 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19), the 'Dons battled all the way to the end as they forced a fourth set after going down 2-0. IPFW finishes the season 13-20 overall.
Emily Spencer led the 'Dons with her fifth-straight double-double, 19 kills and 11 digs. Spencer was named to the All-Tournament team as she improved her program record to 54 consecutive matches in double-digit kills. Somer Johnson and Sarah Heckman both finished the night in double figures with 18 and 14 kills, respectively.
Madison Spence led the Mastodons with 51 assists in the match, while Kendall Wienkes had a team-high 18 digs.
The largest margin by either team was six when South Dakota was up 17-11 in the first set before IPFW came back and tied it at 19 and 20 before losing 25-23. The Coyotes also pulled away in the fourth set, winning by a score of 25-19.
After dropping the first two sets by close margins, the Mastodons came out firing in the third, taking the set 25-21 to force a fourth frame. The 'Dons fought hard with their backs against the wall, tying it at 11 before the Coyotes eventually pulled away to secure the victory and move on to the Summit League championship semifinals on Saturday night.
Spencer, the 2014 Summit League Player of the Year, finishes one of the most prolific careers in program history third in the Double Century with 2106 kills and 1403 digs—with her kills mark ranking second all-time and her digs ranking eighth all-time. The senior also ends her collegiate career as the NCAA active leader in kills.
